An affidavit is a voluntary, sworn (or solemnly affirmed) written statement of facts within the deponent's own knowledge, or believed on stated grounds, made before an officer authorized to administer oaths. It is used as evidence in place of, or alongside, oral testimony in many proceedings, and always requires a verification clause confirming what is stated is true to the deponent's knowledge and belief.
